THE NAME OF THE HOLY PROPHET (PEACE BE UPON HIM) AND RESPECT FOR IT

Today I am going to talk about the name of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him), its virtues and respect for it. The meaning of ‘Muhammad’ is ‘that person who is continuously being praised’. No other human being has ever had this name before the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him). Shaykh Abdul Haq Muhaddith Dehlwi says ‘Allah Almighty kept the name of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) one thousand years before the creation of the Universe’. In Tafsir Rooh-ul-Bayan and some other books have mentioned that once the Holy prophet (peace be upon him) was sitting with the companions in the mosque, Hadhrat Bilal (RA) started reciting adhaan, when he took the name of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) during the adhaan, Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddiq (RA) kissed both his thumbnails and placed them over his eyes. Upon completion of the adhaan, the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) said, O Abu Bakr, whoever does as you did, Allah Almighty will forgive his sins and he will never have any eye problem. Imam Bukhari says, the foot of Hadhrat Abdullah Ibn-e-Umar (RA) had gone knumb, someone told him a cure, which is to mention the name of someone who is most beloved to you. He said, ‘Ya Muhammad’ upon which his foot recovered from the knumbness. Qadhi Ayaz in His Ash Shifa says, ‘whoever keeps the name ‘Muhammad’ due to love for the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) Allah Almighty will grant the person Jannat through the blessings of this name. It is reported in Khasais ul Kubra and Rooh-ul-Bayan, there was a great sinner from the Bani Israel who had sinned for 100 years, when he died the people just threw his body away without ghusl (washing) and Janazah prayer. Allah Almighty commanded Hadhrat Musa (AS) to do ghusl to that body and perform Jazanah Prayer. Hadhrat Musa (AS) replied, ‘this person was a great sinner and people hated so threw his body away’ Allah Almighty replied, ‘he was a sinner, but when he used to read the Torah, whenever he saw the name ‘Muhammad’ he would kiss it, because of that I have forgiven him.’ These are just some of the virtues of the name of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him), which show his great status in the sight of Allah Almighty. We should not just take these literally, but should take them practically by following in his footsteps. May Allah Almighty increase our love for the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) and enable us to follow in his footsteps. Ameen
