About us

Built in 1889 by Dr Gottleib Wilhelm Leitner, the Shah Jahan Mosque was the first mosque to be built in Northern Europe.

It was primarily built to cater to the spiritual needs of Muslim students at the Oriental Institute and any others who were within reach. It is situated on Oriental Road in Woking and is one of the key mosques in the United Kingdom. It played a vital role in the establishment of Islam in Great Britain and it became known throughout the world on account of its publications and missionary work in the early part of this century.

Catering for Woking

The original Mosque can hold up to 60 worshippers and is still used for most of the five daily prayers. As the Muslim population has grown in Woking so has the need for extra space.

We have large halls in the mosque grounds which are used when there is need for more space. These are made up of three sections: A mens section, which can hold up to 1000 worshippers. a ladies section, which can hold up to 600 worshippers, and a community hall. This is a large hall with an attached kitchen and additional washroom facilities, available to hire for weddings and gatherings. It is also used as a sports hall on a few days during the week.

The Mosque provides a fully equipped Ghusal facility for receiving and washing the dead. We can put you in touch with funeral organisations to assist with funeral and burial arrangements.

The Mosque has gratefully received help from the BBC Southern Counties Radio who supported a special project for 2001 with creation of a garden built along an Islamic theme on the South side of the original Mosque. It greets visitors to the Mosque as they enter the grounds.
